The best time of year to embark on a walking holiday, as the experts from the Touching Nature Web Guides know best.
Austria is a great destination for walking holidays and for good reason. A combination of breathtaking scenery, mountain peaks, lush valleys, intriguing towns with culture and welcoming locals make this alpine country a favourite for lovers of the great outdoors from near and far.
Autumn, for many, is the best time of year for exploring Austria’s varied landscapes on foot. Throughout September and October, the air seems almost fresher, the temperature less stifling, making for a more pleasant walking experience. It is also less touristy during the autumn months, creating a more tranquil ambience along the trails. And when the foliage turns the golden shades of autumn, the vista views and canopy-covered paths are that much more awe-inspiring!
Each region in Austria offers gems to the walking enthusiast. Tirol is just one of the areas we recommend for autumn. In fact, the best way to discover this region, characterised by unspoilt nature and pristine countryside, is through walking amidst its alpine peaks and valleys. Tirol offers well-marked trails fit for every skill and endurance level, guides to lead you through the footpaths, maps for self-guided walking and walker-friendly villages and towns. Plus wherever you find yourself in this Austrian region, the mountains always make their presence known.
For example, the Paznaun Valley in Western Tirol is surrounded by the Verwall, Samnaun and Silvretta mountain ranges, the latter having several peaks over 3,000m/9843ft high. The river Trisanna runs through this pristine and relatively remote valley, known for its dense forests and abundance of autumn colours. There are numerous walks, that range between an hour to a full day hike, up and down slopes (that may be complimented by cable car rides) and alongside beautiful lakes. If you choose to go out at dawn or dusk, you may be treated to local wildlife sightings, such as foxes, deer and marmots.
The Ötztal Valley is also a beautiful site for autumn foliage. It is the area of Tirol with the most walking routes, offering you ample choice. Hundreds of peaks surround the Ötztal Valley, many of which surpass 3,000m/9843ft in height. As you drive the windy road into the valley, you will truly be enchanted by the panoramic views of granite summits contrasted by richly green meadows. For trails, you can choose from very short to very long with little or drastic changes in altitude. Some high alpine treks are available across peaks and glaciers that can be commenced after taking a public shuttle or mountain lift. Other routes have you strolling through lush forests or beside vibrant rivers. The Ötztal Valley also boasts an extensive network of alpine accommodation, so you can walk from hut to hut.
The Tirol portion of the Hohe Tauern National Park is also a prime destination for walking enthusiasts. Hohe Tauern boasts over 250 mountains with an elevation over 3,000m/9843ft. There are numerous waymarked trails in the Tirol section of the park. One trail which is particularly lovely during autumn is the Forest Nature Trail, Zedlacher Paradies, which is a 1.5-hour path that allows followers to immerse themselves in centuries old woodlands. The larches that surround the trail turn a brilliant yellow in late autumn.
