“We know Austria in summer, yet we don’t really!” When I heard this I had to smile! This simple sentence summarises exactly what I have experienced over the last year I whilst I’ve been working for the Austrian Tourist Office in London. Many Brits know Austria – especially in winter. I have to admit I also love Austria in winter because I am crazy about winter sports. Austria is known for its perfectly groomed slopes, the “Gemuetlichkeit” and of course the après-ski!
But when it comes to summer, I often hear “Isn’t there still snow on the mountains? It must be quite cold!?” Well, that is true for the five glacier regions where you can still ski in the summer. But they are all above 3,000 m. The rest of Austria’s mountains turn into lush green alpine meadows, where you can wonder and explore. I really love to just lie down on the grass, blue skies above me, take a deep breath, the scent of alpine flowers, the sounds of nature – a buzzing bee, birds singing – dreaming of … Well, of course I couldn’t do that all day. It would be a bit too “relaxing” for me. That is why I might combine it with a jump from a bridge – on an elastic rope of course – or a downhill mountain bike ride. And after all that, maybe have a lie down and dream of my next adventure. I have never tried paragliding and I have to try another via ferrata!
