holidays in austria 2014

Austria is a picture-perfect spot for skiers, with quaint villages nestled within rolling snow-capped mountain ranges, fairy-tale castles and calm icy lakes. The majestic Alps make Austria a mecca for ski and snowboarders and provide a mesmerising backdrop to the prettiest resorts imaginable.

Mayrhofen is one of the best all-round ski resorts in Austria, with runs and snow park facilities for all abilities. The ski area here is vast, covering over 600km and including the Hintertux Glacier and the Vans Penken Park, which is the second largest snow park in Europe. Away from the slopes, the après-ski action is centred on the resort’s main street, which means you can enjoy as much or as little of it as you like.

Zell am See is another good all-rounder when it comes to choice of runs and ski facilities. However, what makes this Austria package holidays destination so special is its location. The slopes sit beside a gorgeous, glacier-clear lake, so you’ll be treated to breathtaking views whether you’re looking up from the resort or down from the snowy mountainside! This traditional village resort is charming and very pretty, so don’t forget your camera for postcard-worthy snaps.

Another gorgeous Medieval Austrian town, Kitzbühel, may seem tranquil with its cobbled streets and traditional spired church. However, after dark, Kitzbühel comes alive with music, drinking and dancing in the most glamorous of ski resort surroundings. And there’s plenty going on away from the runs by day too: have a go on the curling rink, ride a hot air balloon over the mountain peaks or thrill yourself on the 3.5km toboggan run in neighbouring Kirchberg.

If altitude is important to you, Obergurgl is one of the highest ski areas in Austria, with slopes stretching over 3000m. Great powder action is pretty much guaranteed. You’ll find a handful of cafes, bars and restaurants, but the vibe here is decidedly quiet and relaxed, allowing you to focus on improving your ski skills or enjoying the stunning landscape. Free your ankles from your ski boots and walk through the Zirbenwald pine forest nature reserve, or spend your evenings skiing the slopes for nocturnal mountain views to remember.

While Austria holidays offer amazing opportunities to ski, there’s much more to this awe-inspiring country than ski runs alone. Hiking holidays in Austria allow you to take in the stunning scenery and a trip to the capital city of Vienna is like walking into a fairy story.

Austria is truly mesmerising and holidays there don’t have to break the bank. Thomas Cook has great value Austria holidays so you can experience this fairy-tale ski destination on a budget.
